30 YEARS OF THE INTERNET

It’s hard to believe, just 30 years ago, the internet didn’t exist in Australia.

Now three decades later, our country can barely function without it.

Australia was introduced to the world wide web on the 23rd of June, 1989.

While it felt fast back then, us Aussies were just given a tiny cake crumb of connectivity… About a 20th of a megabit for the entire continent.

Today, 85% of Australian households have an active internet connection.

So, what is the internet?

It’s literally a giant network created by networks.

The internet is a connection between millions of computers and devices, like your phone,  from around the world (and space) that can transfer millions and trillions of little bits of information between them.

Recent data suggests Australia is ranked 59th in the world for fixed internet speeds, with an averaging connection speed of 39.29mbps – yet our mobile download speeds are significantly faster, Australia is ranked 5th in the world, just behind Qatar, with 62.38.

According to Australia’s Bureau of Statistics, from April to June last year Australians downloaded an incredible 3.83 million terabytes of data. That’s almost a million more than the same period the year before.

Look at where we are now…

We now have instant access to any video game, movie or TV show in the world.

We chase virtual Pokemon through our suburbs and cities – and we do most of these things from a little device in our pockets.

Facebook has about 2.4 billion active users on its website. Just 15 million of them are Australian.

More than 95 million photos are uploaded to Instagram every day.

300 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute, 5 billion videos are watched worldwide daily.

Netflix has a huge 140 million subscribers and rising, 10 million in Australia… That’s an incredible amount of video streaming!

Think about all of this next time you share a photo or stream a movie or facetime your family. It’s almost Impossible to think where we’ll be in the next 30 years.
